The College High Class of 1976 Prom Story
by Ralph Peck
The Class of 1976 was "The" class that went without a prom, the year we were supposed to throw it and the year we were supposed to enjoy it. Of all the years at Col-Hi those two years, sadly, badly ran afoul, and there was no prom. To remind those who don't remember, at the first prom meeting the president of the class got up in front of the entire junior class, told us that we couldn't have it one night because the band was tied up, we would have to have it another, and so on....
Robin Miles, sitting in the center of the auditorium spoke up and said, to everyone: "This is 1975 not 1955, the days of queens and proms are dead"......at which time Sam Willis, down on the right hand side said "To hell with your prom!" and Ralph Peck said, "Forget the prom, it all doesn't matter anyway!”
At about this time, Dennis Pannell began to move forward toward Sam and Ralph, pointing his finger and yelling at them to go to the office, the crowd fell into disarray, there were boos and guffaws that went up all about the place, people out of their chairs, the officers left the building, it was a mess and Pannell dismissed the assembly, told everyone to leave and shut it down. He met with Sam and Ralph in the office, and we'll leave that to your imagination what was said, but, prom had fallen to an early death. (Bob Mallams, rest his soul, was the one who started all this in his own uncanny way and managed to keep his mouth shut, laughing like a child just moments later.)
